A notorious armed robbery suspect, Diamond (surname unknown) a.k.a Fowlboy, was on Saturday June 26, 2021 gunned down by operatives of the Delta State police command at about 0530hrs.
According to a statement by the spokesman for the command, DSP Edafe Bright, Diamond, a member of a robbery syndicate that had been terrorizing Sapele residents for some time, was killed during an exchange of gunfire between his group and the police.
A distress call had been received by the Divisional Police Officer, Sapele Division, that a three-man gang of armed robbers were in the house of one man (name withheld) in Amukpe, Sapele.
The DPO, CSP Harrison Nwabuisi, immediately detailed patrol teams to the scene in conjunction with vigilantes.
The armed robbers engaged the police team and vigilantes in a gun duel, during which Diamond was fatally shot and others escaped with bullet injuries.
The injured suspect was rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.
According to Bright, one cut-to-size locally made gun, a military camouflage sweater and seven phones of different brands were recovered from him.
Bright said efforts are on to arrest the other fleeing members of the gang.
In another development, on Friday June 25, 2021, a young lady who went to pick her children from school parked her vehicle at Regina Mundi, by Ogbe-Ogonogo market, Asaba.
While she was away, a robbery suspect Chineye Nwakego, 33, through the aid of an improvised vehicle door opener, opened the door of the Toyota Camry.
He was trying to start the engine when he met a steering lock. While he was still struggling to remove the steering lock, the owner of the car met him and raised the alarm.
Passersby helped arrest the suspect, and were about lynching him when the police patrol team from ‘A’ Division, Asaba arrived and rescued him.
The police spokesman said the suspect is currently being interrogated, while investigation is ongoing.
