The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, on Sunday declared Delta State as “the undisputed champion” of the 18th National Sports Festival tagged ‘EKO 2012.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the festival held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Fashola admitted the supremacy of Delta State during the two weeks sporting event.
He said: “Team Delta did well to emerge the best team. As for us in Lagos, we are happy with our position. Our grassroots programme is fast yielding the desired result. Two years ago, we were placed seventh, but today we are third.”
Describing Eko 2012 a huge success, Governor Fashola said the state is ready to assist the next host, Cross River to achieve excellence.
In what is better described as magnificent, the closing ceremony of the games attended by five Governors, Kogi, Delta, Lagos and Osun attracted top Nigerian Musicians who entertained the crowd.
Team Delta, it is recalled, emerged the overall winner of the Festival with 114 gold, 99 Silver and 75 bronze pushing the defending Champion, Team Rivers to the second position with 76 gold, 71 silver and 70 bronze.
The Host, Team Lagos is in the third position with 64 gold, 47 silver and 71 bronze medals.
