An interventionist agency established by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan two years ago has generated 6,001 job opportunities across Delta State.
The agency, the Directorate of Infrastructure, was set up to among other things to fast-track the completion of basic but key infrastructure and act as the secretariat of the Special Projects Tenders Board for the oil rich state.
The governor’s Commissioner in-charge of the Directorate, Barrister Orezi Esievo, said no fewer than 2,002 persons got employed while 50 primary and secondary schools across the state were being renovated and rehabilitated.
Besides the schools, Esievo said the projects that absorbed the youths included contracts awarded in Health, Transport, Education, Information and Communication Technology, power generation and distribution, jetties and boats light/monorail projects and others.
The commissioner, who spoke in Asaba, the state capital, at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba, said the construction of 367 projects as recorded by the state’s Ministry of Works, since 2007 at the cost of N240.8 billion, has provided over 1,247 job opportunities across the state.
According to her, hospital projects alone, including the remodeling, renovation and upgrading of Eku Government Baptist Hospital, the Central Hospital, Warri and the construction of the General Hospital, Ekpan, have given jobs to over 850 persons.
She further said the construction of four new polytechnics across the three senatorial districts of the state and building of bus shelters and junction improvement works, have now put food on the tables of 340 and 312 persons respectively, even as the new Government House, Asaba and its equipping recently gave jobs to 1,250 persons.
Put together, Esievo, who listed weather condition, budgetary constraints, delay caused by community/youth restiveness, vandalization and maintenance as threats to timely completion of the projects, said the 6,001 persons either worked as plumbers, electricians, refuse disposals, painters janitors or provided toiletries.
She said now that work has commenced on the newly awarded N40,076,134,537.23 expansion of Osubi Airport to accommodate modern wide bodied aircraft for increased passenger and cargo flights locally and internationally, more job opportunities have opened up.
While she urged the people of the state to create enabling environment for more projects to be executed by the governor, Esievo said tourism and hospitality facilities about to come on stream, would provide thousands of jobs.
