A delegation of members of the State Executive Council of the All Progressives Congress, led by its Vice Chairman Central and Chairman of the Stabilization and Mobilization Committee in Cross River State, Cletus Obun, on Tuesday visited Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), the former Senate Leader, to formally invite him to join the party.
Obun stated that the APC and Cross River State need Ndoma-Egba’s character, integrity, personality leadership and father figure.
He urged him to ignore recent media attacks on his person on his inevitable membership of the party as the attacks were not from the APC but sponsored hirelings of the opposition party.
According to Obun, the visit was necessary because the party and the state at this point in time need Ndoma-Egba desperately and are desirous to benefit from his political strength in the state and at the centre.
According to the delegation, the decision of the visit was taken as a resolution of an enlarged stakeholders and State Executive Council meeting of the party held recently in Ikom, Cross River State.
According to Obun, the party agreed to go on a serious membership drive to increase its members ahead of the forthcoming local government elections in the state and Ndoma-Egba was targeted among those to be wooed by taking advantage of the ill treatment meted to him by the Peoples Democratic Party.
He further said Ndoma-Egba’s movement to the APC is rather a sacrificial entry with historic duty as he will be inheriting a lot of problems that require his experience to solve.
Another member of the delegation and former Minority Leader and only APC member in the Cross River State House of Assembly, Hon Alex Irek, said “the party mandated us to come and plead with you to come fast.
“The defection is long overdue as members of the APC are anxiously waiting for you.”
According to Irek, it was also resolved at the APC elders’ meeting that was held recently in Obubra to persuade Ndoma-Egba, at all cost, to join the party.
He said the party is not merely going on membership drive, “but of persons of impeccable character and personality like you”.
Another person in the delegation who also spoke was the state Assistant Financial Secretary, Fidelis Ogar.
Ogar said the APC was desirous to have Ndoma-Egba as one of its members and will work to its fulfilment as the party had given them the mandate to woo him and others like former Governors Clement Ebri and Donald Duke.
Responding, Senator Ndoma-Egba thanked the delegation for the visit.
He said he is not just a student of history but he keeps his eyes on history and so it will be the height of selfishness if did not consider their offer but that he will follow the necessary protocol of consulting with his supporters.
He reiterated that for three years the PDP in Cross River State had not invited him to any meeting or event, thus effectively shutting him out of the party but that he is not retiring from politics.
It will be recalled that the Cross River State PDP Chairman, Ntufam Okon, had recently confirmed Ndoma-Egba’s allegation that the PDP had shut him out of its workings.
