The gruesome murder of two lawyers in Delta State has pitched men of the state Police Command against members of the state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association.
The victims were killed two weeks ago while on their way to court in Ozoro, Isoko South Local Government Area of the state.
Some lawyers have consistently accused the police of killing their colleagues, wondering why they were aiding and abetting criminals.
Angered by the comment, the state Commissioner of Police, Ikechukwu Aduba, on Wednesday threw salvoes at the lawyers for allegedly collecting bribes to argue and discharge criminals.
Aduba: “Yes, I am fighting back.
“The lawyers are coming out to say police killed their colleagues but they have forgotten how many times they have defended kidnappers from being sanctioned against the resolutions of the land.
“Why would a lawyer defend a kidnapper who was caught red-handed and had made confessional statement, inter-alia, if not for monetary gains?”
Aduba said instead for members of the association to partner the police to rid the society of hoodlums, they were there enriching themselves with criminal cases.
He said the N700,000 recovered from a lawyer that colluded with kidnappers in the state last year was still with him, maintaining: “It remained a hanging exhibit till date.”
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan’s effort to resolve the ensuing crisis last week when he said “their killers will soon be apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law” appeared not to have had any effect.
