The Speaker, Niger state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bawa Wuse, and the Clerk of the Assembly, Mohammed Kagara, over the weekend tested positive to COVID-19.
It was learnt that fears had gripped workers in Minna, the state capital, especially those from the Assembly in particular due to the latest development.
While confirming the situation on Sunday, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mohammed Sani Idris, said the Speaker and Clerk of the Assembly are down with COVID-19 and currently on isolation, adding that the two are doing well.
The Speaker, other lawmakers and principal staff have since gone into isolation and are quarantined as the State experiences the second wave of the virus.
However, an unconfirmed report has it that the spike in COVID-19 in the state has resulted in death of some Nigerlites, including that of a former Head of Service, Alhaji Mohammed Maude Lapai, which occurred on Saturday.
A source at the Assembly told the Eagle Online that most of the test carried on the lawmakers returned negative except that of the Speaker and the Clerk.
It should be noted that the state government had directed workers to stay at home from Monday.
The Government also ordered the closure of public and private schools and tertiary institutions across the state for the period of thirty days.
