As part of deliberate efforts to contain the global spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Niger State Government on Thursday suspended all religious and social gatherings.
The Government in a statement issued by Secretary to the State Government, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, also directed the closure of public and private schools as well as tertiary institutions across the State as from March 23, 2020.
It should be recalled that the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mohammed Makun Sidi, had on Wednesday briefed journalists, saying the negative effect of the coronavirus on the economy is global, but the state will continue to watch as things unfold.
Sidi added that the state has started the production of hand sanitisers as a way of making it accessible to everyone and as well reduce the cost, pointing out that mass mobilisation of the people has also begun.
The SSG disclosed that the suspension of all public gatherings, including religious and social, and the closure of public, private schools as well as tertiary institutions, which is for a period of 30 days, is with immediate effect.
Matane further revealed that the measure to shut down the schools for 30 days and suspend public gatherings is part of deliberate efforts to contain the global spread of Coronavirus by the state government.
He therefore called on the people of the State to always uphold the highest degree of personal hygiene, remain calm and adhere strictly to all safety measures earlier announced by the State Ministry of Health.
However, most private schools in Niger State have taken measures by ensuring students and pupils sanitise their hands and remain hygienic.
