A Federal High Court In Kano on Tuesday sentenced a 42-year-old man, Salisu Tanko to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling a 13-year-old girl.
Delivering judgment, Justice Sa’adatu Mark also fined the culprit N1 million for the crime.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons charged Tanko with one count of sexual assault.
“The only way to discourage this type of crime in our society is to punish those found guilty severely.
“To this end, the court sentences Tanko to seven years imprisonment with hard labour and N1million fine.
“In the event, the convict cannot pay the N1million, he will serve an additional one year jail term.”
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Abdullahi Babale said in January, 2020, the convict lured a 13-year-old girl into an uncompleted building and defiled her.
Babale said the convict gave the victim N500.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 16 (1) of the Trafficking In Persons (Prohibition) Act of 2015.
Responding to the judgment, the NAPTIP Kano Zonal Commander, Desmond Garba, described the sentence as a welcome development.
