A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded a 36-year-old Portuguese woman, Roseangela Goncalves, over alleged cocaine trafficking.
Justice Saliu Saidu ordered that the woman should be kept in the Ikoyi Prisons pending when the Portuguese Embassy or Consular Office in Nigeria would be informed about the case.
Saidu held that it would serve the course of justice to contact the embassy.
The judge ordered the woman’s Counsel, Emmanuel Okenyi, to inform the embassy of the case.
Gonclaves (a.k.a. Samira) was arraigned alongside a 38-year-old Nigerian, Christopher Olua, on a two-count charge.
The duo, however, pleaded not guilty.
The judge granted Olua bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum, one of whom must be a public officer of Grade Level 15 or above.
He adjourned the case to December 2 for mention.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Frank Dinneys, submitted that officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency arrested the accused with about two kilogrammes of cocaine at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State.
Dinneys told the court that the accused conspired with one man, still at large and simply identified as Ikechukwu, to import the banned drug.
According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Sections 11 (a) and 14 (b) of the NDLEA Act, 2004.
Drug trafficking attracts up to life imprisonment.
