A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, on Thursday, sentenced a 27-year old woman, Esther John, to five months imprisonment for stealing wrappers.
The convict who resides at Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, was arraigned on one count of theft, offence she admitted committing.
The magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, however, gave the convict N10, 000 option of fine.
Emmanuel said the punishment would have been more severe if she had not pleaded guilty and saved the court the pains of prolonged prosecution.
He warned the convict against taking to crimes again.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that on Sept. 5 the complainant, Grace Bala, of Ungwan Pama Kaduna, reported the matter at the Sabon Tasha Police Station.
Leo told the court that the convict entered the complainant’s sewing shop on the same date under the pretence of repairing her skirt and stole some wrappers values yet unknown.
He told the court that the complainant raised the alarm as she discovered that some customers’ wrappers were missing when the convict left her shop.
The prosecutor added that when the convict was chased and searched, the wrappers were found in her bag.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 271 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
Following the plea of the convict, the prosecutor prayed the court to try her summarily, under Section 347 of the Administration of Criminal Justices Act, 2015.
