An Apatere Grade C Customary Court in Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State has dissolved the marriage between Jackson Udom and his wife, Fulera Taiwo Udom, on grounds of irreconcilable differences and refusal of the defendant to subject their daughters for traditional circumcision.
The Court President, Sunday Alamu, said the two had ceased to be husband and wife and should go their separate ways.
Alamu ruled: “The court hereby orders you, the plaintiff, Mr. Udom, to pay the respondent, Mrs. Fulera, the sum of N200,000 as severance fee so she can move on with her life.
“She should also be granted custody of the children.”
The Eagle Online reports that Udom, a Journalist and Chairman/CEO of Peesfun Plaza, Awotan, Ibadan, who resides at 5, Omowumi Close, Apete, Awotan, had prayed the court to grant him divorce on grounds of insubordination, disrespect and violence at home.
He told the court: “My wife has no respect for me, she flouts my orders at will and fails to recognise me as the head of the family.
“The height of it was her refusal to bring back my daughters for circumcision according to our family tradition, inciting my children against me.
“Her refusal to bring back the children has caused me disrespect in the family because I am seen as a man who cannot control his wife and home.
“I hereby plead with this court to grant my request so I could go ahead to marry another wife to regain my respect in my family.
“She has no knowledge of what marriage is all about, she will disrespect my family at will, calling them bush people and refuse seeing them.”
Throughout the proceedings, Fulera did not show up in court in spite of several summons.
