Supporters and well wishers of suspended Senator Ali Ndume on Monday demonstrated solidarity for the lawmaker by organizing a rally at the Unity Fountain, Abuja ahead of the former Senate Leader’s resumption next week.
The Senate had in March suspended Senator Ndume as recommended by Senate committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.
He was accused of raising allegations made against the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, in an online medium over the alleged importation of N298 million Jeep into the country without payment of required customs duty and Senator Dino Melaye over alleged first degree certificate forgery.
Ndume was accused of unnecessarily distracting the attention of the Senate on allegations based on rumours and not investigated by him before raising them on the floor of the Senate.
However, the group, which called itself Ndume Support Initiative, and led by Ibrahim Muazzamu, the coordinator, said it came for show of solidarity to demonstrate their love and belief in the senator.
Muazzamu told newsmen that the group was in Abuja to commence a programme that will mark the countdown to the resumption of Ndume from what he called unjustified suspension.
According to him: “We are carrying out the rally to voluntarily demonstrate our support for him.
“This is a show of our love and passion for his efforts toward Southern Borno and indeed Nigeria.
“We also recognize his efforts in the fight against corruption, which is in line with the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.”
Muazzamu said the resumption has been fixed, believing that nothing will change the date.
He said constituents were expectant that the lawmaker would continue in his effort towards the development of the area.
The coordinator said: “We missed a lot of his representation during his period of suspension.”
