The leadership of the ongoing National Conference on Monday expressed optimism that the 20 Standing Committees would conclude work and submit their reports not later than May 15.
The Assistant Secretary, Media and Communications, Akpandem James, told the News Agency of Nigeria that most of the committees were already at harmonisation stage.
James said some committees had gone far in their work and were already tidying up their reports for submission to the conference.
He said: “Some of the committees have gone quite far with their work, with some tidying up their reports, but none, as at this afternoon, has submitted any final report.
“In most of the others, the sub committees have submitted their reports and are at the harmonisation stage.
“However, those with heavy workload occasioned by the high thematic categorisations, still have some work to do.”
The media officer said some committees that had gone far with their work had decided to go on a short break.
According to him, the 10 committees that have been meeting at the NICON Luxury Hotel have been relocated to the National Judicial Institute, the official venue of the conference.
James added: “Since some of the committees at the NJI have gone far with their work and have decided to take a short break, we thought it wise to bring those at NICON, who still have some work to do, to relocate temporarily to NJI.
“Most of the meeting rooms in NICON have been given out to other clients for the period.”
NAN recalls that the conference leadership granted the request of committees for extension of time to enable them “meaningfully conclude their work and submit thorough reports”.
James said the leadership of the committees observed that the time given for committee work was grossly inadequate, considering the workload.
He stated that the constraint of time was further compounded by the Easter public holidays that took the time for committee work.
James added that the extension was also in view of some delegates who were expected to participate at the World Economic Forum and others who would be dislodged from their accommodation at NICON.
He added: “It was necessary to extend the period for committee work to accommodate the exigencies and also allow for thorough work to be done.
“Consequently, the committees have been given up to Thursday, May 15, 2014 to conclude work and submit their reports as deliberations at plenary is expected to resume on Monday, May 19, 2014.”
