The National Conference has kicked against the payment of pension, severances pay and life insurance for governors, deputy governors and legislators in Nigeria.
The decision of the conference was sequel to the adoption of the report of the Conference Committee on Public Service.
Delegates also adopted the recommendation of the Conference Committee on Public Service to make legislators at the national and state levels to function on part time basis, while their allowances should be what obtains in other arms of public service.
Efforts by the Committee to increase the retirement age from 60 years to 65 years was rejected by the conference delegates.
Before the consideration of the report, some of delegates who spoke called for reduction in the number of civil servants in the country, saying the country spends too much on recurrent expenditure.
Speaking on the report of the committee, a delegate, Anayo Nnebe, said the committee’s report came at a time when government was already “taking bold steps at downsizing or as some might say right sizing as we have seen it done in the Aviation industry”.
