The National Human Rights Commission has lauded the Nigerian Army over the improvement in human rights protection in its operations in the North East.
The NHRC Executive Secretary, Tony Ojokwu, gave the commendation at the opening of a two-day interface with stakeholders in Yola, Adamawa State on Wednesday.
Ojokwu said human rights observation by military in its engagements had improved significantly in recent times.
He said: “The military has improved a lot in observation of human rights, I must emphasise this because we need to encourage them.
“The commission invested a lot in training of the military in the area of human rights and I am happy they are now responding and they are very cooperative.”
Ojukwu said statistics in 2015 revealed that no fewer than 100 suspects were arrested without due process daily by the military in its operations in North East.
Ojukwu said the situation has drastically change as between one and two persons are being arrested on daily basis now.
He said the objective of the training is to highlight some unresolved protection issues regarding Internally Displaced Persons.
He said: “And to encourage responsible government agencies and relevant humanitarian actors to make effort at resolving them early.
“The project, which commenced in February 2019, has recorded a good number of targeted responses.
“The commission, therefore, deems it necessary to have an interface with organisations that handle the protection issues.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports participants at the event were drawn from government agencies and Non Governmental Organisations who specialised in humanitarian activities.
