The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jubrin, on Sunday in Abuja called on Nigerians to stand united with the Federal Government to confront the current national security challenges.
Jubrin, represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Ameen Ikioda, made this call at the Inter-denominational Church Service to Mark the 2014 Navy Week.
The service, which was held at the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, Mogadishu Cantonment, was also to mark the Navy’s 58th Anniversary.
The Naval chief said occasions like the anniversary celebration call for sober reflection and prayers for the nation as it was facing serious security challenges at the moment.
He said: “I want us to bear in mind that it is a common problem for all Nigerians, old and young, and for all the ethnic groups in the country.
“I strongly believe that with hard work, dedication and determination, the present situation will become a thing of the past.
“I want to sincerely thank all of you for your sacrifices so far in your efforts at preserving the peace and unity of the country.”
Jubril said security is key as the Navy strides towards the attainment of the Transformation Agenda of the present Administration.
He also explained that Nigerian Navy’s transformation plan was “anchored on the vision to put in place a navy that is adequately motivated and capable of effectively combating the security challenges in Nigeria’s maritime domain”.
The Chief of Naval Staff however said he was aware of the constraints faced by naval personnel in their operations as well as the myriad of welfare problems.
He added: “In this regard, I am delighted to say unambiguously that improved welfare shall remain the cornerstone of my administration.
“To this end, I will do all within my powers with available resources at my disposal to improve your welfare, notably in the areas of new barracks accommodation, quality training and provision of uniforms, amongst others.
“While we strive to address the welfare problems, I urge you to continue collectively and individually to conduct yourselves and discharge your duties with the highest sense of integrity, teamwork and professionalism.”
Jubrin, while appreciating the support of the personnel, said he looked forward to working more closely with them to achieve the shared aspirations for improved security.
He said the shared aspirations should not be to only have improved security in the nation’s maritime environment but also in other areas in the overall national interest.
Earlier, Rev. Godshelp Osaghae, the Director of Naval Chaplaincy, had in his sermon titled: “Onward Together,” said: “People who are not together cannot make it.”
Osaghae used the biblical book of John chapter 17, verse 17 to 22 to illustrate his points.
Osaghae said it was clear from the scriptures that those who work against the plan of God were not able to make it.
“For Nigeria to be set free, there is need for us to look at the word of God, which is the truth,” he said.
The chaplain said the very first thing the nation should do is to come together because that is God’s plan concerning the nation.
Osaghae added: “The Lord that brought us together 100 years ago did not make a mistake.
“It is for all of us to key into that vision and follow it up.
“This nation, from the heavenly realm, is great.
“We know that if we come together as a nation, great breakthrough is ahead of us and we will lead other nations.”
The Nigerian Navy was established on June 1, 1956 and commenced operations with 11 different types of ships and crafts.
