Maverick musician and activist, Charly Boy, on Wednesday led a sensitisation rally organised by the Nigerian Communication Commission to educate the public against the destruction of telecom infrastructure.
The News Agency of Nigeria report that the rally, tagged: “Vandalisation of telecom infrastructure,” kicked off at the Training School of the defunct Nigeria Telecommunications Limited, Oshodi, Lagos.
Charly Boy, whose original name is Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, was accompanied on the rally by large number of motorcyclists, locally known as Okada riders.
The rally, which attracted public attention, was conducted through major streets from Oshodi to Lagos State Government House, Alausa, Ikeja.
Charly Boy, or Area Fada as he is usually called, and his members were clad in white T-shirts and face caps bearing logos of the NCC.
On their way, they distributed hand bills with the inscription: “Stop Vandalisation of Telecom Infrastructure. Be Vigilant, report any case of telecom vandalisation to security agencies.”
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, Charly Boy said he agreed to be a part of the rally because he believed in the cause as championed by the NCC.
He said: “Telecom Infrastructure should be the property of everyone because we all use phones and other services provided by them and should not be vandalised or stolen.
“Whether the network provider is government-owned or privately-owned, no one should vandalise their property because we need them.”
