Edinson Cavani has emerged Manchester United’s Player of the Month for the second time in a row.

El Matador was nominated for the prize alongside Mason Greenwood and Scott McTominay, following an eye-catching end to the campaign in which he scored five times in six appearances.

The no.7’s tally included a superb brace against Roma in Italy, an excellent header at Aston Villa and a world-class chip against Fulham on the day fans finally returned to Old Trafford.

Of course, the 34-year-old also netted during a hard-working display in the Europa League final.

After winning this award in April, Cavani has now retained the trophy by receiving 76 per cent of votes that were cast by users in the Official App across the Bank Holiday weekend.

Edinson’s young protege Greenwood finished second with a 14 per cent share of votes and McTominay was third on 10 per cent, although both men were worthy winners in their own rights.

Cavani’s runaway success for the month of May means he has now drawn level with Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes, who have also claimed two trophies this season.

It underlines an impressive end to an excellent debut campaign at Old Trafford and United fans are excited to see what the former Paris Saint-Germain man can produce in his second term, having recently signed a contract extension that keeps him at the club until June 2022.

During Monday’s episode of The Debate, a brand new show tackling the latest talking points and hot topics, former Academy graduate Danny Webber was quick to highlight Cavani when asked to name members of the squad who have excelled.

“When we’re discussing players who have shone, the first person who comes to mind is Cavani,” said the ex-striker and current agent. “Having come in without doing a pre-season with us, being able to gel into the group, his attitude every moment he has been on the pitch has been first class. He has had niggles and suspension, so to hit 17 goals and have the impact he’s had has been massive.

“I think he has helped Mason and that has been a massive plus. There was a period when Mason wasn’t scoring goals, but as a striker sometimes you know when you are working on another part of your game then the goals dry up a little bit, but he has put the pieces back together again and you could see he was working on back to goal, getting his body in, and he is doing that really comfortably now, so I have noticed a really nice bond between Edinson and Mason.”
