The Assistant Secretary, Media and Communications, Akpandem James, told the News Agency of Nigeria that most of the committees were already at harmonisation stage

Akpandem’s statement reads: “The attention of the National Conference Secretariat has been drawn to media reports indicating that the Federal Government has extended the duration of the National Conference by six weeks. The information is not only misleading but untrue in fact

The IYC said that it was not yet uhuru for the issue of resource control, adding that it would continue to push for total control of resources derivable from the Niger Delta region

The committee added a clause that state governments can approach the Federal Government for license to explore and exploit mineral resources in their respective states

Ogunrinade, who is the chairperson of the committee, said some employers of labour retained casual workers because they were not ready to pay gratuities, describing the act as “unacceptable”

The IYC took further the face-off of the Niger Delta with the North over resource control, which went a notch higher at the ongoing National Conference

The decision followed extensive debate on the recommendations of a 11-member sub-committee chaired by retired Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Mukhtar

The conference was inaugurated on March 17 by President Goodluck Jonathan and was to have lasted for three months
