Goalkeeper Jacob Banda believes Zesco United have gained enough experience to overcome their bogey away form against Nigerian teams in Africa.
The Zambian club visits Enugu Rangers this Sunday for their second 1/16th round first leg clash.
This will be Zesco’s third trip to Nigeria in eight years where they are winless with two defeats, losing 3-2 against Kano Pillars during the 1999 CAF Champions League group stage, and suffering a 3-0 loss Warri Wolves at the knockout stage of the 2010 CAF Confederation Cup.
“This time around we have experienced players and we know what it takes to play in the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Champions League,” said the Zesco captain and goalkeeper, who is a veteran of the two continental club championships.
“I think we have enough experience now to handle the pressure in West Africa.”
Banda further added that the team will hold their own despite injury setbacks and suspensions that have especially hit Zesco’s frontline.
Striker Jackson Mwanza is injured while his attacking partner Idris Mbombo is suspended for the away leg.
That has left Kenya-born Jesse Were and John Chingandu as the regulars in the travelling party to Enugu.
The situation has forced Head Coach, Zlatko Krmpotic, to call up fringe striker Maybin kalengo and new signing Patrick Kongolo for the crucial away test.
“It is a big blow, we will miss them but I think the team has enough firepower to replace them,” Banda said.
“I believe the replacements will do their best that is why they are registered.”
Midfielder Misheck Chaila and defender Simon Silwimba will also miss the trip due to injuries.
