A 40-year-old cab driver, Mujeed Oguntola, on Thursday appeared before an Abeokuta, Ogun State Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, for allegedly driving recklessly and causing injury on a motorcyclist.
Oguntola, whose address was not provided, is facing a three-count charge of reckless driving, driving on the highway without a licence and inflicting injury.
The prosecutor, Inspector Abolade Bukola, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 26 at Ayodele Village in Abeokuta.
Bukola said the defendant drove a Nissan Sunny taxi cab with registration number OGUN JGB 913 XA on a public highway in a reckless and dangerous manner and caused an accident that injured a dispatch rider.
He said the defendant hit the complainant who was riding a Honda Motorcycle with registration no. FG 17-J42, property of NIPOST, and damaged it.
“When he was arrested, the police found out that he drove the vehicle on the public highway without a valid driver’s licence and expired vehicle papers,” the prosecutor said.
Bukola said the offence contravened Sections 6(1) , 7(1),10 and 11 of the Federal Highway Act Cap F13 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The Magistrate, I.O. Abudu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.
Abudu said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide evidence of one year tax payment to Ogun Government.
He adjourned the case until January 13 for trial.
