The Senate has finally rejected the controversial aspect of the Harmonised Senate and House Electoral Amendment Bill 2021.
This came after the Senate became rowdy following the aspect on electronic transmission of polls results.
The rejection on Thursday during plenary, saw the Senate go into a closed session after the rowdiness could not be contained.
After the closed door session, senators resorted to voting after they called for division.
At the closed of voting and counting, while 52 out of those who voted backed what was in the report, 28 said no.
They then amended the section to make the Independent National Electoral Commission seek approval for electronic transmission of results from the Nigerian Communications Commission and the National Assembly.
The controversial section 52 (3) was then amended to read: “The Commission may consider electronic transmission provided it is adjudged by the Nigerian Communications Commission and approved by the National Assembly.
The section, which was opposed largely by senators elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, had initially read: “The Commission may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable.”
