The Anti-Cultism Unit team of the Lagos State Police Command that shot dead a football fan, now identified as Kolade Johnson, on Sunday has been arrested.
The spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Bala Elkana, revealed this in a statement on Monday.
Kolade was said to have been shot dead by the team on Sunday while watching the English Premier League match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur at Beco Street, Onipetesi, Mangoro Bus Stop
This led to the blocking of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway by some angry youths.
Elkana said based on the development, policemen from the Rapid Response Squad and Metro patrol were promptly drafted to the scene.
He said the account of eyewitnesses helped in identifying the team, which fled the scene immediately after the incident.
He added: “Members of the team suspected to be involved in the shooting have since been arrested and are currently in Police custody undergoing interrogation.
“They will be subjected to internal disciplinary procedures, and may be prosecuted in conventional Court if implicated by ongoing investigation.”
Owing to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Zubairu Muazu, has called for calm, assuring that justice will prevail in this case.
The Commissioner of Police also condoled with the family, friends and well wishers of Johnson.
Muazu has promised to initiate far reaching reforms to help in repositioning the Anti Cultism Squad for effective service delivery, particularly in area of respect for Human Rights and proficiency in the use of firearms.
