In what appears a coup against the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who announced the postponement of the party’s National Convention in Rivers State, the Convention has actually started.
After Sheriff announced the postponement of the Convention, his deputy, Uche Secondus, declared it open.
Sheriff, who was engaged in a fierce battle with the governors elected on the platform of the PDP, told newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, at about 3pm that the National Convention was postponed due to the court cases against it.
However, shortly after the announcement, Sharks Stadium, the venue of the event, came alive, with Secondus declaring the convention open.
among those who have delivered addresses at the Convention as at press time were the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, and the Chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Prof. Walid Jibrin.
It was gathered that a former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has been appointed in interim capacity as the National Chairman of the party.
Makarfi is to serve for three months.
This is an indication that the position of the National Chairman would not be contested at the Convention.
