The Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, on Wednesday revealed that 70 per cent of imported codeine into country were used in Sambisa forest by Boko Haram Terrorists.
Lawan made the shocking revelation at a time when the Federal Government placed a ban on the usage of codeine syrup.
Coming under point of order during the Senate plenary on Wednesday, Lawan, who applauded the Federal Government’s decision to ban the drug, added that some Nigerian security agents are under the influence of drugs.
He said: “The information I got this morning is that 70 per cent of this codeine that comes into Nigeria finds its way into Sambisa forest and what that tells us is that we have Boko Haram elements who are using this and we have other addicts who are using this.
“We may even have some of our security agents who are under the influence of drugs.
“Therefore we need to do everything possible to support the executive on this to minimize even if we can’t eliminate completely this scourge.”
The President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki directed the relevant committees of the Senate to ensure proper oversight to see that the ban is strictly comply with.
