There are strong indications that some major areas in Lagos State would experience long periods of blackout due to a drop in the volume of power being generated at the Egbin Power Station in Ikorodu, near Lagos.
A senior official at the power station, who did not want to be mentioned, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday that the station currently generates only 300 mega watts of electricity.
The source said that the current generation capacity of the station could not be compared with the 1,080 mega watts of power it generated last week.
According to the source: “Only three out of its six units are currently running, with others working at low shedding due to gas supply shortages.
“Each of the units, which has capacity for generating 220 mega watts, now generates only about 100 mega watts.”
NAN recalls that the Transmission Company of Nigeria disclosed that Nigeria’s power generation had dropped by 1,598 mega watts on Sunday, nationwide.
TCN’s General Manager Public Affairs, Dave Ifabiyi, had said that the nationwide drop was caused by the destruction of gas pipelines from the Okoloma Gas Plant in Rivers and Escravos, Delta State.
lfabiyi had said that some of the affected power stations were: Egbin/AES, Olorunsogo, Omotoso, Geregu NIPP, Afam IV and VI, as well as Rivers State Independent Power Station.
Ifabiyi had disclosed that gas pipelines that were vandalised had resulted in generation losses of 593MW and 1,005MW from the two zones hosting the power stations.
He had said that with the loss of 1,598MW, the total power generation as at 2pm on Sunday was 2,290MW nationwide.
NAN reports that the Egbin Power Station located in Lagos has capacity to generate 1320MW of electricity.
