A bill seeking to establish the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Agency scaled first reading in the Senate.
The passage of the bill into law would strip the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of the control of the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit.
The bill was introduced by Senator Chukwuka Utazi.
This came less than 24 hours after Ibrahim Magu, the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, set up a committee to work on the process of making the unit autonomous to comply with the requirements of the Egmont Group.
