Hajiya Jummai Abdul, a Nutritionist with Wuse General Hospital, Abuja, has said that the consumption of benne seeds would aid reduction of high blood pressure, prevent cancer and other diseases.
Abdul told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that consumption of a small amount of benne seeds was capable of fighting the diseases, adding that it could also boost the immune system for healthy living.
She said: “Benne seeds are high in copper, manganese, calcium, and magnesium and some vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.
“Not only do benne seeds contain an anti-cancer compound called phytate, but the magnesium in it also harnesses anti-cancer properties.
“The risk of developing colorectal tumours and cancer decreased by 13 per cent and 12 per cent respectively for every 100 milligramme of magnesium taken.
“Benne seeds are rich in fibre, which is known to pave way for a healthy digestive system and a healthy colon, as well as improving cardiovascular health.”
Abdul said that benne seeds, as well as its oil, was useful for removal of dental plaque, boosting oral health, strengthening blood vessels, bones, joints and management of diabetes.
She also said that benne seeds could be used for the management of asthma and other respiratory disorders.
