Bayelsa speaker sworn-in as acting governor

The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Nestor Binabor, was late on Friday sworn-in as the acting governor of the state.

The Chief Judge of the state, Justice Kate Abiri, performed the swearing-in ceremony.

The delay in swearing-in Binabor was as a result of the insistence of Abiri on seeing the judgment sacking the state’s former Governor, Timi Sylva, from office by the Supreme Court.

A chopper was reportedly sent to Abuja to ferry the judgment.

There has been increased security in the state, especially the state capital, Yenagoa, since the Supreme Court pronounced the sack of Sylva and four other governors after their bid to elongate their tenures further failed.

Except for a spot around Tombia Roundabout where soldiers were in charge of security, the town was being secured by the police.

The Government House was sealed up immediately the judgment was delivered.

The Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Police Command, Hilary Opara, urged the people of the state to go about their businesses normally and remain law abiding.

Opara said: “Bayelsans should remain calm and law abiding.

“The government belongs to the people.

“If there is any change of leadership, a Bayelsan is going to be there.”
