The Independent National Electoral Commission has cancelled the election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State in the ongoing governorship election in the state.
The cancellation was occasioned by the violence that has attended the election the area.
As early as 6am, violence had been witnessed at the headquarters of the local government area in Opoloma where four persons were reported killed.
Gunmen, allegedly led by an ex-militant, opened fire on those distributing election materials at the INEC office in the local government secretariat.
It took the combined efforts of operatives of the Joint Task Force and policemen to ward off the attack after the security men on ground called for reinforcement.
The state Governor, Seriake Dickson, told newsmen during the course of the election that he was not pleased with the security situation as thugs allegedly loyal to the All Progressives Congress had been having a field day.
