A 36-year-old banker with an old generation bank, Oluwaseye Adu, was on Monday arraigned at an Ikeja Special Offences Court for allegedly stealing $200,000.
The money belongs to the Insurance Brokers of Nigeria, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which arraigned the defendant on a count of stealing.
The banker, whose house address was not provided, however, pleaded not guilty.
According to EFCC counsel, U.U. Buhari, Adu committed the offence sometime in 2014 in Lagos State.
“The defendant dishonestly converted to his own use the sum of $200,000 belonging to Insurance Brokers of Nigeria,” he said.
Adu alleged that the defendant used his position as the bank’s relationship officer to the complainant, IBN, to steal the money from its account.
He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.
Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo granted the banker bail in the sum of N20 million with two sureties in like sum.
Taiwo ordered that one of the sureties must be a landed property owner and a close relation of the defendant residing in Lagos State.
The judge further ruled that the sureties must show evidence of tax payment.
Taiwo adjourned the case until May 4 for trial.
