Access Bank Plc, Eket branch, Akwa Ibom State has threatened to seize the property of Aniekan Akpan, the Eket Local Government Chairman, over an alleged debt of N10 million.
In a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Eket on Saturday, the bank’s lawyer, Ben Ndedde, said the chairman obtained the loan in December 2008.
The statement said Intercontinental Bank, which was acquired by Access Bank, granted a loan of N4.5 million to Akpan through his company, trading as Fast Service Nigeria Enterprise.
It said that the inability of Akpan to pay off the loan within the stipulated period resulted in an increment in the interest rate.
The bank said: “The accumulation of the interest had resulted in the upsurge in the amount initially borrowed to the whopping sum of over N10 million.
“We have judgment against Trading as Fast Service Nigeria Enterprise, it is an enterprise owned by the present chairman of Eket Local Government Area.
“Before going to court, the bank had written repeatedly and brought to his attention that he is owing Access Bank and that he should pay the money.”
It said that the bank is determined to enforce the judgment, adding that the bank had obtained a court order to seize the chairman’s personal property.
However, Akpan disagreed with the position of the bank that he was indebted to it.
He said the claim was a ploy by his detractors to malign his well earned integrity.
