The Bank Manager of Union Bank, Kano State and the Head of Operations have both been arrested for allegedly stealing N661 million from their employers.
The suspects, Samuel Obende, who is the Branch Manager, and Rabiu Alhasan Dawaki, Head of Operations, of Bello Road Cash Centre of Union Bank Public Liability Company in Kano, were alleged to have abused their positions to perfect the heist.
The suspects were picked by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The Commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said that the bankers were saddled with the responsibility of evacuation and supplying of cash to about 17 branches of the bank in Kano, Katsina, Kaduna and Jigawa States.
Uwujaren added: “In the course of carrying out their duties, they fraudulently conspired and stole the sum N661,000,000. In an effort to conceal the illegal act, they fabricated accounting entries, which deceitfully showed that all the monies were sent to the respective branches. Investigation into the fraud continues.”
