Officers and men of the Delta State Police Command have uncovered a baby factory in Oko, Oshimili South Local Government Area.
A suspected habitual female human trafficker, Chienlo Ezeugo, and five pregnant women were arrested while four children were rescued.
Those rescued included Ibrahim Usman, a five-year-old boy; Usman Mohammed, two years; Chidera Okechukwu, five years; and Abigail Ezeugo, a year old.
The Delta State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, conducted journalists round the hideout where the pregnant women were cramped into before delivery, with several of them undergoing nurturing for the purpose before of delivery for onward sale.
According to Kalu, the ‘B’ Division of the police command, on a tip-off, got information that Ezeugo, believed to be in her forties, had recruited unknown pregnant women and delivered them of their babies for sale.
She said: “Chinelo Ezeugo harboured some children and some pregnant women, whom she is trafficking.
“After nine months of conceiving and when they give birth, she will go on to sell the babies.”
Kalu lamented the spate at which baby factories being discovered across the country.
She said it has assumed a dangerous dimension.
She solicited the cooperation of members of the public to furnish the command with useful information, adding: “You can imagine this kind of dilapidated place, who can suspect that such act could be going on here.
“So, people should be vigilant and observant and when they see things that are not right in the society, they should inform the police.
“It is a crime to give birth after nine months of pregnancy and sell.
“We will charge all the suspects, including the merchant and the five pregnant women, to court as soon as investigation is concluded.”
Several baby factories have been discovered around the country in the recent past.
Such states where baby factories have been found included Abia and Ogun States.
