Nigeria’s Umar Aminu was picked as the star of Friday’s third-place match versus Mali and could emerge the AYC top scorer with four goals.
Aminu’s closest rivals for the Goal King award are Egypt’s Hamid Mahmoud and Ebenezer Assifuah, who are both on three goals apiece and have a chance to increase their tally in Saturday’s final.
The Wikki Tourists of Bauchi striker scored his second brace of the championship for Nigeria to redeem themselves with a 2-1 victory over Mali on Friday to finish third in Algeria.
Nigeria’s Uche Nwafor emerged top scorer at the 2011 edition of the competition in South Africa, also on four goals.
Aminu has fought back from a poor start against Mali in an opening Group B match to score a double against DR Congo before he grabbed another brace against the Malians.
The 18-year-old striker did not score in the qualifying series as he was played on the right side of attack as against his role as a second striker for his club.
In Algeria, in a crunch group game against DRC, the Kogi State-born Aminu took his second chance in the absence of the suspended Olanrewaju Kayode, as the top striker and he has not looked back ever since.
He has quick feet, superb dribble, pace and a big engine that allows him to cover every blade on the pitch.
Reports indicate that his displays in Algeria have sparked off a huge interest among several top clubs in Europe, who are represented at the 2013 AYC by officials and scouts in Algeria.
