The Super Eagles of Nigeria and Nottingham Forest of England striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, says his celebration when he scored against Sao Tome and Principe in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, in a Africa Cup of Nations qualifier was a way of saying thank you to God for the goals.
He offered the explanation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
NAN recalls that the Nottingham Forest attacker was on the scoresheet when the Super Eagles overran their visitors in Uyo on September 10 in the last match of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Awoniyi then while celebrating the goal covered his face with his shin guards, which has a cross as an inscription on it.
He told the NAN: “God is the only one that can make things happen and it is my own way of sharing light to the world.
“I always believe that even though you are not a perfect human being, light is always shining in the darkness.
“One with God is the majority and that was why I chose to celebrate my goal that way.”

The Super Eagles’ marksman, who described representing Nigeria at any stage as a privilege, pledged to always give his best whenever he is called upon.
Awoniyi has scored thrice in four games played so far in the English Premier League, though he has become a household name in Nottingham in England.
NAN also recalls that Nigeria finished top of the group with 15 points ahead of Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe in the AFCON qualifiers.
