The State Security Service has re-arrested the major suspect of the Christmas Day bombing in Niger State, Kabir Sokoto. Sources in The Presidency, Abuja told The Eagle Online that Sokoto was apprehended this morning by officers of the SSS. Sokoto, who escaped from the custody of the police after his initial arrest, is believed to be the mastermind of the bombing of St. Theresa Catholic Church, Madalla, Niger State.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, on Monday January 30, 2012, delivered ruling on an extradition charge filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, , against Rasheed Abayomi Mustapha. Delivering judgment, Justice Patricia Ajoku dismissed the preliminary objections raised by counsel to the fugitive, Dr. Joseph Nwabike, SAN, that the court was not competent to hear the extradition charge against Mustapha.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has filed an appeal against the ruling of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja dismissing the charges of corruption against a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, and his then deputy, Alhaji Usman Nafada.The appeal, filed by the EFCC’s lead counsel in the case, Festus Keyamo, at the Court of Appeal, Abuja, faulted the jedgement of Justice S.B. Belgore of the Federal High Court that there was no prima facie case to warrant Bankole defending himself.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has called off its over 40 days strike to protest a variety of issues, which it said the Federal Government has not addressed over the years. ASUU today opted to call off the strike despite the fact that most of its demands have not been met. The union had on December 4, 2011 while fixing December 19, 2011 for the commencement of the strike, listed a number of issues over which it expressed concern on the failure of government to respond positively.

Dreaded sect, Boko Haram, again on Saturday attacked a police station in Kano State. The attack on Mandawari Police Station left at least five persons dead, with one of them being a police constable. The rest were members of the Boko Haram sect. They died in a shootout duting the attack on the police station.

The United Kingdom has warned its citizens against travelling to Kano. The warning, contained in a Travel Advisory issued today, also warned those who are already in the ancient town wracked by attacks by Boko Haram on Friday, to be wary of their movement.
