Atletico Madrid have been crowned champions of Spain following a 1-1 draw in La Liga’s ‘title-decider’ against FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
Cesc Fabregas chipped an angled ball towards Lionel Messi, who cushioned the ball down to Alexis Sanchez who lashed in an unstoppable strike from a narrow angle to leave Barça just 45 minutes away from the title.
However, a sustained spell of pressure from the visitors 10 minutes before the break showed signs of what was to come.
Just four minutes into the second half, Diego Godin leveled the game with a bullet-header from a corner.
Barcelona threw players forward in their attempts to score a second and title-clinching goal but a sturdy performance by the Atletico team prevented any such chance.
Fans of the Catalan giants rose to their feat to applaud Atletico in an iconic moment at the final whistle, as the club from the capital earned their first La Liga title in 18 years.
The only negative aspect for Atletico were the injuries to Diego Costa and Arda Turan who were substituted off in the first half.
Both players now look highly doubtful for next week’s Champions League final against rivals Real Madrid.
