The Nasarawa State House of Assembly on Monday approved the list of nominees sent to it by Governor Tanko Al-Makura for consideration as Special Advisers after reducing the number from 20 to 16.
The House passed the resolution for the approval after deliberation on the motion moved by Godiya Akwashiki (PDP-Nasarawa Eggon West) on the floor of the House in Lafia.
Godiya, who is also the Deputy Speaker, had drawn the attention of the House to the current economic reality in the country and the state in particular.
He moved a motion calling for a reduction in the number of the advisers from 20 to 16.
He said: “My colleague, Gov. Tanko Al-Makura, is requesting the House to approve 20 SAs that will assist him in running the affairs of the state.
“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has empowered the governor to appoint anybody that he wants to help him in running the affairs of the state for the betterment of our people.
“Our function is to give approval based on the economic and financial position of the state government and I want to move a motion to enable the House to approve only 16 SAs out of the 20 as requested by the governor.”
Alhaji Abubakar Imam (APC-Lafia Central) seconded the motion.
Imam said: “Based on the economic and financial situation, which the state is presently facing, especially on the payment of local government and primary school teachers’ salaries, I second the motion to reduce the number of Special Advisers.”
The House unanimously adopted the motion.
The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe, directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolution to Governor Al-Makura for necessary action.
