The Rivers State Government on Monday inaugurated an eight-man Judicial Commission of Inquiry to look into the July 9 and July 10 crises in the House of Assembly.
Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who inaugurated the commission, urged them to investigate and ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the crises.
Represented by Tele Ikuru, his Deputy, Amaechi charged the commission to also investigate and ascertain the number of persons injured or threatened with injury.
He said: “Ascertain property destroyed; their owners and the value of such property, identify those directly or indirectly involved in the crises.
“Ascertain whether external persons or factors outside the assembly influenced or are involved in the crises.”
He urged the commission to investigate any other matter that might come their way during deliberations not covered in their terms of preference.
The governor said they should make recommendations that would bring lasting peace to the assembly.
He added: “I wish to charge you that in the course of your deliberations and decisions, you need to be active, firm, courageous and sincere.
“You are also required to conclude and deliver the report of your investigations to the government of Rivers State, on or before October 15, 2013.”
The Chairman of the commission, Justice Biobele Georgewill, said they would do their work with integrity, faith in God, to restore peace to the assembly and the state.
Georgewill said: “We ask of your promise that when we submit our report, you will look into it and implement it.
“If we work and come out with recommendations and if they are not implemented, we will not be happy.
“This is because we want to make suggestions and recommendations we are sure, will move our state forward.
“I assure you, we will not fail Rivers State, we will not fail Rivers people, we will do what is right and just to all manner of persons that will appear before us.”
No date has been fixed for the commission to commence sitting.
