Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Friday ordered an investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the water tank that collapsed behind the main bowl of Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
A statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu, in Asaba quoted Okowa as saying that the incident, which occurred on Thursday, was regrettable.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the state government is currently hosting the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba.
The governor said he was thankful to God because no life was lost.
The governor said that a disciplinary action would be taken against anyone found culpable in the incident, adding that such an incident would be averted in the future.
He called on the athletes and spectators to continue to savour the beauty of the competition, which he said, had recorded appreciable success.
