The Kano State Police Command has said that 186 persons died in Friday’s explosions in the ancient city of Kano.
This revelation came to light just as the police said it discovered about 100 unexploded explosives in the city.
According to a statement by the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, Ibrahim Idris, those who died included 29 29 policemen, three operatives of the State Security Services, one officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, two staff of the Nigeria Immigration Service, a journalist and 150 others who were civilians.
The areas affected, according to Idris included the Police Zonal Headquarters along Bayero University Road, where a suicide bomber drove a car forcefully through the gate and detonated a bomb, which destroyed part of the building.
He said some terrorists launched an attack in the Farm Centre and Zaria Road Police Divisions, the NIS office located at Farm Centre, the SSS headquarters at Giginya Quarters, the official home of the Assitant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone 1 Command and St Louis Secondary School.
The attacks were simultaneous.
The police noted that at the command headquarters, two cars, heavily-loaded with explosive devices primed for suicide attacks, were repelled by the police.
The first suicide bomber, Idris said, drove through the JFK end of Bompai Barracks but was resisted by the officers on duty.
The second suicide bomber, who drove a Toyota Camry, was shot at by the police, leading to his running into a wall in the Kano State Police Command Headquarters.
The driver, who attempted to bolt after this, was shot dead by the police.
In the process, the explosives were demobilised.
The police also on Monday said it found cars and vans filled with about explosives in Kano.
The vehicles in which the explosives were found were reportedly abandoned by members of Boko Haram on sighting policemen at a checkpoint.
