The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the girl rescued by troops in a forest in Borno State, Falmata Mbalala, is indeed one of the Chibok schoolgirls.
Mbalala was rescued in Baale, near Damboa, Borno State on Monday night.
A terse statement on Wednesday by the spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Colonel Usman Sani, confirmed the development.
The statement said: “This is to confirm that one of the abducted Chibok school girls, Falmata Mbalala, was among the rescued persons by our troops at Baale near Damboa.”
The schoolgirls were kidnapped two years ago by members of the dreaded sect, Boko Haram.
About 300 of them were reportedly kidnapped, with some escaping, leaving 219 with the Boko Haram insurgents.
With Mbalala’s escape, the number of girls in the hands of the terrorists has reduced to 218.
