As counting in the governorship election in Anambra State is ongoing, The Eagle Online deems it necessary to give an update on the votes requirements to emerge a governor in Nigeria.
The Independent National Electoral Commission conducted the election into the Anambra State Governor’s Office on Saturday.
Leading candidates in the election are the incumbent and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Willie Obiano; the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Oseloka Obaze; and that of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Tony Nwoye.
According to INEC: “A candidate for a contested election to the office of Governor shall be declared winner if he has:
“The highest number of votes cast at the election; and
“Not less than one-quarter of all the votes cast in each of at least two-thirds of all the LGAs in the state.”
In the case of Anambra State, the State has 21 local government areas.
This means that the winner of the election must have at least 25 per cent of votes in at least 14 local government areas apart from the majority votes cast in the election.
