The Advanced Congress of Democrats on Tuesday nominated Oby Okafor as its candidate for the November 18 governorship election in Anambra State.
She emerged from a unanimous decision of 63 delegates of the party at its primary election in Awka.
Okafor is the first woman to get a party’s nomination for the election.
The Chairman of Governorship Primary Election Committee of the ACD, George Okparah, who announced the emergence of Okafor, said she met the party’s conditions and conformed to the guidelines.
Okparah expressed confidence that ACD, with a female candidate, had the best material for governorship of the state.
In her acceptance speech, Okafor thanked members of the party for believing in her ability to fly their flag in the governorship race.
She said it was time women were given the opportunity to serve in highest political office in the land.
Okafor, who is the Chairman of ACD in Anambra, said that the state would be better under her leadership, if elected.
She said: “I am happy to have been nominated by our party; we can now go into this election very prepared.
“It is time women are given the mantle of leadership, because some men have failed us in politics, so they should give women a chance.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
