Adeniyi Saliu, the Chairman, Eredo Local Council Development Area, Epe, Lagos State, says his administration plans to build a world class artists village in the area to boost tourism.
Saliu told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Sunday that the artists’ village was part of his administration’s priority to raise revenue.
He said that the village would be built in Sungbo, an ancient monument located in Eredo community.
NAN reports that Sungbo was built in the 10th century as a monument and for spiritual fortification of the ancient Kingdom.
It is the largest known ancient man-made structure in sub-Saharan Africa and was placed on UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on November 1, 1995 in the Cultural category.
Similarly, in September 1999, findings by a British Archaeologist, Dr. Patrick Darling of Bournemouth University, helped to popularise the site.
Saliu said: “The artistes’ village will be built to international standard which will be showcased to the world as the biggest attraction in Lagos state.
“It is a place where people will be selling their art works, crafts, scripture and locally made goods to tourists.
“It will also serve as an avenue where visitors, artistes and tourists can connect with heritage, culture and nature, as it is close to the ancient monument site.
“Nollywood actors/actresses can also shoot movie in the area when we finish building the village, because it will have a good cultural environment.”
According to Saliu, the project is open for investment and the council will welcome partners to invest.
He said: “Although, Lagos State Government plans to develop the monument and build some structures around it, but the council also have its own plans to build additional structure.”
