Three Nigerian footballers, one of whom had played in the first division of the Indian League, were arrested on Friday along with a woman from an apartment in Garfa of south eastern Kolkata, India for allegedly running a brothel, police said.
The arrested players are Adeola Hassan of Mohammedan Sporting and Michael Tayo and Wahid Abdullah of Kalighat Milan Sangha. The woman is alleged to be a sex worker.
All four were produced before the Alipore court, which remanded them to judicial custody till March 9.
A police officer said following complaints from locals that the Nigerians were running a brothel in the area for quite some time, a raid was conducted on Friday. Upon entering the apartment, police found one of the players in a compromising position with the woman.
Tayo had earlier played in the first tier of the I-League for Sporting Clube de Goa and Air India. All three took part in the second division I-League this season.
According to police, the local residents had complained to police that Tayo, Adeola and Wahid had teased local girls and housewives, and even tried to molest them.
Tayo rented a flat at Purbachal near Sakti Sangha club in the Garpha area some months ago. He plays for the Kalighat Milan Samity football club and had played I-league for Sporting Clube De Goa and Air India. Hassan is a defender for Mohammedan Sporting and Wahid is Tayo’s teammate at Kalighat.
An officer said that the local police had informed them that the Nigerians were running a brothel in their flat. On Friday evening, some residents saw one of them entering the apartment with a woman and informed police.
The police turned up at the apartment. A pornographic movie was playing on their laptop. Michael, Hasan and Wahid were arrested along with the woman, who was identified as a sex worker from Sonagachi.
