The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mohammad Danmallam, has ordered IGP X-Squad in the state to fish out police personnel extorting money from people in the state.
Danmallam gave the directive on Tuesday at the command’s headquarters in Enugu while addressing all officers and men operating in the metropolis.
He also warned them against incivility to members of the public.
He said: “On extortion, I have charged the officer in charge of IGP X-Squad, Assistant Commissioner of Police, John Babangida, to go round and fish out those in the habit of extortion of residents in any guise.”
He said that the team should especially watch out for policemen who “extort motorcyclists, motorists and others so that they can be brought to book”.
Accepting the responsibility, Babangida assured that the squad would carry out the assignment diligently, and released his telephone number, 08033140979, for residents to contact him.
He advised the public to go to the nearest Divisional Police Officer’s office where any extortion is taking place and call him from there so that he could establish contact with the DPO for prompt action.
Babangida said: “I have warned that any Divisional Police Officer who fails to give audience to such person will have himself to blame.
“I urge members of the public to help `say no’ to extortion and any form of impunity from the police.”
