The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has suspended its planned industrial action scheduled to begin on Monday, issuing fresh seven-day ultimatum due to ongoing negotiation with the government.
The decision to give fresh ultimatum was reached at the weekend at an emergency National Executive Council meeting of the association in Abuja.
According to the association’s National President, Abdulrafiu Adeniji, a committee has been constituted to look into the full implementation of the Industrial Arbitration Panel judgement.
The nation’s nurses had planned to commence a nationwide strike by the midnight of February 23, 2014 to press home their demand for the implementation of the Industrial Arbitration Court judgement.
However, Adeniji said he would not hesitate to call out members on strike should the government fail to reach an amicable agreement with the Union.
It would be recalled that the association on Wednesday issued a notice of industrial action over the Federal Government’s failure to implement the Industrial Court judgement.
A statement by Abdulrafiu Adeniji and the association’s acting Secretary General, Yusuf Badmus, reads in part: “Therefore, we call on all our members nationwide to remain calm and continue in their civic duties of caring for the sick and wounded.
“The pending issues are: The commencement of internship for graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing Science degree programme in Nigeria so that this would be binding on all states of the Federation; The inclusion of the internship post/grade for graduate Nurses in the Scheme of Service of the Federation so that the Nurse internships could be remunerated during the period of internship; That graduates Nurses be properly placed in the scheme of the federation on entry into Civil Service of the Federation; and That all Registered Nurses/Midwives with professional qualifications of RN/RM be allowed to progress to the peak of the career.”
