The Federal Government has accepted the apology of the South African Government over the decision of its health officials to detain and deport Nigerians who wanted to enter the country.
The South African health authorities had last week detained and deported 125 Nigerians who arrived the country aboard Arik Air and South African airways.
Speaking this evening, Nigeria’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, said the Federal Government had accepted the apology tendered earlier today by the South African Government.
Ashiru said: “On behalf of Mr President and the Federal Government of Nigeria, I as Foreign Minister will accept the apology and I will be sending a letter back to my counterpart in South Africa accepting the apology of the South African government.”
As earlier reported today, South Africa apologised for a mass deportation of Nigerians.
“We wish to humbly apologise to them, and we have,” South Africa’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Ibrahim Ibrahim, told reporters. “We are apologising because we deported a number of people who should not have been deported.”
